"If you are looking to attend college or grad school as a mother or single mother, find a mentor, find someone who has been there, find someone to tell your story to, and network!"

The nurse handed me the little rectangular test, with two bright, pink lines.

Positive.

I had just finished my first year of college at the University of Minnesota, barely an adult myself, and was faced with deciding whether I would be able to raise someone else to adulthood.  I made that decision, though I was constantly pushing out of my mind the thoughts that I could become another statistic, a failure.

My son was born the following spring.  I continued that next fall as a single mother, using loans, grants, and a few scholarships to pay for tuition, books, rent, food, and eventually daycare.  Thanks to the professors who took a chance on us, my son came to classes with me that first year of his life, sleeping almost the whole time.  He has attended daycare ever since, and has flourished.  I had always been on the track to medical school, but after being producer of a popular teenage mothering website for a few years during college, I found that population-based health care may be a better fit.

I decided to go ahead with the MCAT that I had already signed up for, but instead chose to apply to the University of Minnesota School of Public Health for the Master of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health program.

I finished my BS in biology in 2006, gave birth to twins as a surrogate mother one month later, and was subsequently accepted to the MPH program in early 2007.

After finishing my first semester as a full-time grad student with "A's" across the board while working 20 hours per week, I am more proud than ever to have chosen the path that I did.  We have made it this far, and will continue to make it.  I currently am planning on pursuing a PhD in epidemiology when my MPH program is completed.  I believe that my experiences and education will help in research and in analyzing the programs and policies that are currently in place to encourage the health of women, children, and families.

If you are looking to attend college or grad school as a mother or single mother, find a mentor, find someone who has been there, find someone to tell your story to, and network!

Get out there and meet people, and don't be afraid to ask to have coffee together.  Not everyone will have interests right up your alley, but almost everyone can help you continue in the direction you would like to go.
