A Manifesto on the Non of Non-Traditional Student
(after Foucault)

No more othering of mothering!

Whereby we think that groups should name themselves instead of being named by others, and whereby we think that being named by others as to something that is not what everyone is implies that the non-entity is just that, an other, a non-entity, ostensibly to be ostracized even though the colleges allege that the whole reason to create a non-traditional student services it to include these non-entities, we suggest that colleges change non traditional student services to, well, email us with suggestions!

No othering of mothering!

The Scoop on Non-Traditional Student Services on College Campuses

 by Lauren Mindel

The main reasons many college moms pick community colleges to attend is
because of all the resources the schools have readily available.  Many times they offer help finding housing, have child care, and scholarships for books, tuition, daycare, and housing all readily available to
college moms
At many 4 year schools, all of those resources are there, you just might have to dig a little bit deeper.  A good way to become acquainted with the 4 year school you wish to attend, is to do some research on the internet.  On many campuses across the country there is a section for non-traditional student services.  This is for single parents, commuters, international students among other students with other commitments besides school.  Some of the things that non-traditional services offer are help with housing, scholarship information, among other support for college moms.
At Emporia State University in Kansas, they offer non-traditional Students services for child care, housing, health insurance, job information, shuttle information, among many other helpful contacts.
At the University of North Dakota, the non-traditional services offers the help of the women's center when discussing issues that college moms face when going to school and juggling kids, jobs, college live.  They put online a whole booklet of questions non-traditional students face, among suggestions of support, and contact information for academic advising.
The University of North Carolina at Wilmington has an excellent section
for non-traditional services.  They offer a ton of information on child care, scholarships and financial aid, and even a section called survival tips geared toward ideas about managing stress, time, family, and forming a support system.  The best part of UNCW is they have a non-traditional student week and a non-traditional student of the month. This is part of the services to inform the University and the community of the achievements and challenges that non-traditional students face.
--------This month they featured a mom's story of balancing work and school. They also have their own honors society and their own non-traditonal students organization  Their motto is: NTSO Mission: To foster and support non-traditional students, honoring their diversity, while in the search of knowledge and academic excellence. This organization will provide a positive environment for academic assistance, social and civic involvement.
It might seem in many circumstances, that attending a community college and being a college mom is the best decision.  But there are the same resources and opportunities available to you at the 4 year schools.  Non-traditional student services are available and there are many people at the four year universities that offer support and guidance.
