About
the Kent State LIFE Program: College Mom Magazine's
Editor's
Note:
We usually do not approve of these "token" programs,
especially if the college has not taken steps to assure equal
access for pregnant and parenting students to all housing and
programs offered other students. We advocate for equal access
to the University and we especially do not approve of "special"
and isolating classes. Nonetheless, this program was recommended
by a College Mom who emailed us and so we include the information
here. |
| Please see the Editorial
page or the "About Us" page to see that we advocate for equal access to
education as protected under federal legislation, Title IX, and
also the state and university's own anti-discriminatory policies. |
|
We assume that Kent State
University is accessible
for College Moms and this program is an effort to give moms extra
help. College Moms
have the right to all services and accomodations provided other
students and, if colleges do not offer the same services, they
risk being sued using Title IX legislation and, consequently
losing all their federal funding. Discrimination is serious and the colleges and
universities must realize this. If you feel you have been discriminated
against see the activist page in the Guide to Colleges for Pregnant
and Parenting Students, and see a lawyer. College Moms know that they must make the colleges
understand that they may be breaking laws by not being accessible,
and that College Moms must protect their rights to ensure that
those moms following them will not face the discrimination that
has barred so many mothers from equal access to education.

Begins Program to Assist College Parents |
Good program for single
mothers in college:
Kent State's LIFE, Literacy and Independence for Family Education's
program was started in the Fall
of 2006 and provides ten single parent families with housing
on campus. The ten families live in individual apartments in
the Allerton Family Housing complex on the Kent State Campus
in Kent, Ohio. The ten families take two classes together, and
Introductory Orientation class and an English class, allowing
the mothers to get to know each other in order to provide support
and encouragement. The program assists with financial aid and
provides access to community resources.
